A dream of the deep blue of the sea, of flexing my tail to push me into the depths and then shooting upward to break through the surface of the water, total dolphin style, was rudely erased from my mind. That feeling of total and complete comfort, of stability, and freedom, was shattered as the walls began to shake. There was no gradual impact, it was total chaos, and it reminded me of the only time Iâd ever been in an earthquake. Rhys tightened his hold around me as the walls of the house shook and the figurines on the nightstand fell and shattered against the floor.
âWhat the hell is that?â I screamed. Did New Orleans have earthquakes? My groggy mind couldnât remember. Damn it! I wanted to be back in the sea!
âI don't know! Hold on.â The shaking lasted a little while longer before we were able to get out of bed. Along with everyone else, we ran down the stairs and out the front door to what felt safer. Hell, if the house was about to collapse, we didn't want to be inside of it!
âIs everyone okay, did everyone make it out?â Roxanne frantically counted heads and held on to my motherâs hand.
âWeâre all okay, weâre here.â Maggie spoke and tried to calm Roxanne who looked like she would faint.
âYou were warned!â We turned to the voice that rang out in the darkness behind us. Standing, in black cloaks like a scene from every horror movie Iâd ever seen, were the witches of New Orleans, front and center was Marlo, the old witch that lead the coven. She was the only one to drop her hood, the others stood in silence awaiting her command. I recognized the stature of the two directly at her sides. They were the ones who manhandled me at her command when Maggie kidnapped me to be judged. Each one of the witches that accompanied her chanted a familiar spell. It was a spell that worked to call for strength, and to give that strength to someone, to Marlo. Great, the wicked witch of the bayou.
âI did nothing wrong!â I shouted at the old lady. Her statement was intended for me, there was no one else in attendance thatâd been kidnapped and tortured by that bitch.
âYou think that we werenât watching? You think that we would really let you run around, the abomination that you are, without keeping tabs on you? We knew that Margaret would betray us. She is weak and was always too fascinated by you.â She spat on the ground at Maggieâs feet. âJust as I thought she would, she turned her back on our cause.â
âI did no such thing!â Maggie marched forward, prepared to defend herself. âIf you want to go off on some lynching job, you do that on your own time! Sy faced the spirits and they called off your little hunt! I do not answer to you, Marlo!â
âSilence child!â Maggie fell to her knees under the weight of the power Marlo threw at her.
